What is occupational therapy?
Occupational Therapy is a health profession within the field of rehabilitation medicine. The profession’s focus is on the promotion, restoration and maintenance of productivity in people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. Educated in the behavioural and neurosciences, occupational therapists provide assessments and treatment plans to all individuals who have inherent difficulties satisfying their life roles- things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations).
The role of occupational therapy in paediatrics is to equip children with the foundations to be successful in living skills. Consultation, assessment and intervention is directed to enhance a child’s ability to be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives, improving their ability to perform the daily operations of life such as self-care, studying, playing or working.

Do you hold classes for my child?
We are not a school, which means we do not offer 'classes' to our clients. Redwood Therapy & Learning Centre is a centre providing occupational therapy treatment sessions to our clients.
Do you provide day care?
No, we do not; neither do we expect you to just leave your child with us when he or she comes for occupational therapy.
We encourage parents to be in the therapy room. However, it is on a case-by-case basis as some children may perform differently when their parent/guardian is around. Sometimes, we may have to excuse the parents for 30 minutes (time variable) before joining in the therapy session. We believe in the empowerment of parents, and observing the therapy session allows parents to have some take backs to be practised at home for further reinforcements.

Why are you so strict with your policy?
To ensure that we are not being taken advantage of, we have to set forth certain policies that favour responsible families who are committed to receiving our occupational therapy services. You will need to sign a policy and consent document (local resident or oversea) with the intent that both sides are clear as we collaborate together.
We do not have any obligation to prioritise or give any special privileges to any families as we believe that all should receive an equal share of services from Redwood Therapy & Learning Centre as deemed appropriate.

What is your operation hours like? How do we make an appointment?
We are currently operating from Tuesdays to Saturdays with the earliest slot at 9 a.m., and the last slot at 5.30 p.m.
An OT session is typically 50 minutes, including a short discussion with parents on the goals to be achieved in a given time frame.
For the first session (initial assessment), it will be 1 + 1 hours. The first hour will be just with the child, while the second hour on a separate day will be with the parents only (without the child). You will need to fill in an online general information form before we see you on the initial assessment appointment dates.
Feel free to contact us or whatsapp to check on the slot availability as we operate on appointment basis.

How long should my child go for occupational therapy?
Every child is unique. The duration may vary from child to child. Usually the therapist will discuss with you the proposed frequency.
Most of our clients urdergo weekly occupational therapy sessions i.e. once a week, and some, twice a week for the early stages of interventions. We also have clients committing intensive sessions - 4 times weekly in a proposed time frame. Usually in the beginning, we may require more consistency on a regular basis to set the pace and familiarity for the child. Once the child is accustomed and has shown apparent signs of improvement in the goals set forth, the therapy sessions can be spaced wider and eventually be discharged.
As learning is a lifelong opportunity for all of us, clients are always welcome to return any time for further consultation or assessment at any stage of their lives, as and when they require additional support or assistance to overcome any particular challenge(s) that they may be facing.
